Frederickson Power
A GEM of a Unit for Frederickson Power
By Ric Chernesky
Frederickson Power
Frederickson Power is a combined cycle electrical
generating facility that has utilized CCECO equipment
since 2003 to remove contamination particles and water
in all our steam turbine oils. We have effectively and
consistently maintained a low ISO rating of around
12/11/9 with CCECO technology. We have no evidence
of excess hydraulic varnish being created and oxidation
levels stay very low.
There is a lot of discussion in the industry today concerning
fine micron filtration & oil polishing. CCECO’s GEM units are
the best we have tested. We have considered other
conditioning techniques such as centrifuges, electrostatics,
balance charge agglomeration and adsorption and researched
which is the best for addressing varnish, oxidation, sludge and
water in our oil. There are pros and cons with each of these
other methods but for us here at Frederickson Power and the
oil conditions we encounter, we have proven success in
maintaining our turbine oils with CCECO fine micron filtration
technology.
Our conditioning program is augmented with a diligent oil
analysis program through CCECO. We methodically monitor
oil conditions (oxidation, thermal degradation, contamination
and additive depletion) and oil physical and chemical properties
(viscosity, acidity, oxidation stability, and other changes).
Testing to date, indicates good oil conditions and properties with
a minor propensity to varnish which validates our success. CCECO is a partner in our maintenance program and has significantly helped reduce MRO costs in our operations.

Paper Mill Saves Immediately
Oil, Equipment & Downtime
Simpson Tacoma Kraft Paper Mill Off-Line Kidney Loop Filtration.
When a CCECO GEM-100 industrial series was installed on the Chemi-Washer drive system at Simpson the results were immediate. Within 40 hours, the GEM-100, that “turns” the reservoir volume several times per shift, and had an ISO 14/11 for system oil cleanliness.
According to Simpson, the return on investment (about $4,500 initial cost, including element and connections/fittings, and $175 for replacement element) is extremely good. The reduction of in-line filter change-outs alone can pay for the installation within a year. Far greater savings have been realized by reduced oil and equipment replacement, repair costs, and downtime, with maintenance intervals extended more than twofold. The CCECO unit is also quality construction, with user-friendly features for ease of operation.
